In Jennifer’s words, this ceremony takes inspiration from a yoruba wedding tradition, the couple will taste something bitter, sour, spicy and sweet. These flavors are standing in for the full spectrum of emotions and states of being you might feel as you navigate married life together.

First they tasted the bitter mezcal. A life lived honestly and openly will know its moments of denial and rejection and dejection. May they always have the strength to move through the bitter moments of life and love with kindness and tenderness for each other.
Second they tasted the sour flavor of lime, representing all those times in life which might feel inharmonious, a little rancid, or less than perfect. May they always have the presence of mind and heart to move through the sour moments of life and love with patience and understanding.
Third, they tasted the hot cayenne. For sure there is spice and passion and straight up hotness in every enduring relationship. May they always have the wisdom to know when life and love needs a good dose of muy picante, and the will to act on it.
And finally, taste now the sweet agave. For truly…. if you can hold the sour, the bitter, and even the spicy with equanimity, it is promised that Collin and Matt’s days will be even sweeter than agave.
